Student Rights and Responsibilities

Students with disabilities that substantially limit them at the postsecondary level have the right to:

  • An equal opportunity to participate in and benefit from courses, academic programs, services, and activities offered through the University;
  • Respect for their privacy regarding disability-related information, except as disclosures are required or permitted by law;
  • Information made reasonably available in accessible formats;
  • Reasonable accommodations, academic adjustments, auxiliary aids and services when necessary.

Students with disabilities have the responsibility to:

  • Meet the academic and technical standards for admission to or participation in an educational program, activity, service;
  • Disclose their disability to the Accommodations Resource Center as early as possible if they need to request accommodations;
  • Provide the required documentation of disability and current need for accommodations when necessary;
  • Follow published policies procedures for obtaining information, using services, and requesting reasonable accommodation(s) in a timely manner;
  • Seek information, counsel, and assistance as necessary;
  • Seek out resources that may enhance their study skills and/or supplement their classroom instruction (i.e. tutoring and writing centers).

University Rights and Responsibilities

The University, through its faculty and staff, is entitled to:

  • Establish and maintain requirements and standards for admission to the University, and for participation in courses, programs, services, and activities;
  • Request current, relevant information to verify a disability and the need for reasonable accommodations, at student expense;
  • Require that students request accommodations in a timely manner;
  • Deny a request for an accommodation if the student fails to provide current relevant information verifying a disability and need for the accommodation, incomplete information, or if the requested accommodation is not reasonable;
  • Deny requests by students who have not registered with the Accommodations Resource Center or who do not qualify as an individual with a disability;
  • Require registered students to follow the Accommodations Center procedure to receive accommodations;
  • Select among equally effective reasonable accommodations, adjustments, and/or auxiliary services.

The University has the responsibility to:

  • Ensure that admissions policies and procedures are implemented in a non-discriminatory manner with regard to individuals with disabilities;
  • Ensure that courses, programs, services, and activities, when viewed in their entirety, are accessible to individuals with disabilities;
  • Provide appropriate reasonable accommodations, academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, and services in a timely manner;
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality of disability-related information.
