Requirements (12 credit hours)
This course provides a comprehensive foundation in telemental health practice. Students will explore licensing and legal standards, ethical considerations, client and provider readiness, risk assessment, and emergency planning for virtual care. Emphasis is placed on technological fluency, secure documentation, and effective therapeutic techniques for online settings. By the end of the course, students will demonstrate the ability to evaluate readiness for telehealth and apply essential skills for safe, ethical, and effective practice in virtual environments.
This course examines the ethical, legal, and professional complexities of delivering counseling through telehealth platforms. Students will analyze current professional codes of ethics (ACA, NBCC, APA/ATA), licensure requirements, HIPAA compliance, liability management, informed consent, and the role of technology in documentation and recordkeeping. Emerging issues such as the ethical use of artificial intelligence in mental health practice will also be addressed. Practical applications include developing risk management strategies, evaluating legal frameworks, and establishing professional business practices. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to navigate challenges in telehealth delivery with competence and confidence. Prerequisite: MCC 564
This course emphasizes culturally responsive and equitable approaches to telehealth counseling. Students will examine barriers to care, cultural biases in telehealth, and the unique needs of underserved, rural, and at-risk populations. Through case examples and application, learners will develop skills for providing services across cultural, socioeconomic, geographic, and developmental differences. By the end of the course, students will have skills and knowledge to apply ethical, client-centered interventions that recognize and respect diversity in telemental health settings. Prerequisite: MCC 564
This course emphasizes strategies for building rapport and maintaining engagement in virtual counseling. Students will examine provider and client readiness, common myths of telehealth, and practical engagement techniques. Theoretical models such as CBT, EMDR, and person-centered approaches will be explored through the lens of online adaptation. Role plays and case examples will highlight interventions that foster connection and therapeutic alliance in virtual spaces. By the end of the course, students will be able to apply evidence-based strategies to effectively engage clients in telemental health practice. Prerequisite MCC 564
