Does the Military Pay for College?

If you're serving, have served, or are part of a military family, you’ve probably heard that the military can help cover the cost of college. The good news? It’s absolutely true. And at Bellevue University, we make sure you get the most out of these benefits because we’re for you. Located near Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, Nebraska, we’ve proudly supported military students and their families for over 50 years, offering preferred tuition rates and fees to help those serving—or transitioning out—succeed in their educational journey and civilian careers.

From Tuition Assistance and the GI Bill® to scholarships, federal student aid, and college credit for military training, there are multiple ways to turn your service into an educational opportunity. Let’s break down your options for military financing so you can move forward with clarity and confidence.

Tuition Assistance (TA) for Active Duty Personnel

For active-duty service members, Tuition Assistance (TA) is one of the most valuable education benefits available. Each military branch offers TA to cover tuition and approved fees, often up to 100%, so you can work toward your degree while continuing to serve.

What Does TA Cover?

TA typically covers up to $250 per credit hour, with an annual cap of $4,500 per service member, resetting each fiscal year. Bellevue University strategically aligns its undergraduate military tuition rate with the $250 cap, so eligible students can earn their bachelor’s degree without worrying about surprise costs or paying out of pocket.

Eligible Programs

TA can be used for approved degree programs from associate to master’s level, as long as your school is accredited and meets your branch’s guidelines. Bellevue University’s career-focused, fully online programs are built with active-duty students in mind.

GI Bill® Education Benefits

If you’re a veteran or transitioning out of active service, the GI Bill® is a powerful resource to support your education. Whether you’re using the Post-9/11 GI Bill or the Montgomery GI Bill, Bellevue University helps you make the most of your benefits.

We offer flexible programs that align with your GI Bill® eligibility, including 100% online degrees and career-focused options designed specifically for veterans and service members. Our dedicated team works closely with you to ensure a smooth transition and to maximize the value of your GI Bill.

If you’re ready to take the next step or have questions about using your GI Bill® benefits at Bellevue University, our Military Support Team—made up of staff who have been there and understand the needs of military personnel—is here to help whether your goal is to advance in the military or begin a new career.

Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Even if you're using military education benefits, completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) can open additional doors to financial support. Veterans may qualify for resources like Pell Grants, federal student loans, and work-study programs, significantly reducing education costs. Bellevue University encourages all veterans to complete the FAFSA to maximize available financial aid.

Leveraging Military Experience for College Credit

Your military training and experience can translate into real progress toward your degree. Bellevue University evaluates military transcripts and follows transfer policies that allow eligible service members to receive college credit—helping you save both time and money on your path to graduation. Our team will work with you to review your Joint Services Transcript (JST) and identify how your experience applies to your chosen program.

  • DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST): Exams that allow you to earn college credit by demonstrating knowledge in a subject, similar to end-of-course exams.
  • CLEP Exams: The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) offers tests that let you earn credit for what you already know in general education subjects.
  • Joint Services Transcript (JST): An official record of your military training and experience that can be evaluated for potential college credit.

As a reservist, Bellevue’s understanding of my military commitments was a huge plus. They gave me the flexibility to attend my annual trainings without missing a beat in my studies. That kind of support made all the difference in my ability to balance everything. My advisor explained that all the military courses I had taken and the CLEP exams I’d passed while serving counted for college credit! I had no idea that those experiences could be applied toward my degree, and suddenly, the path to completing my education seemed much clearer and faster. Looking back, one thing that stands out about BU is how they truly understood my needs as a non-traditional student and veteran. They offered me the resources, flexibility, and support I needed to succeed—and that was especially crucial as I juggled a career, family, and service in the military.

Financial Aid and Scholarships for Military Families

Beyond TA and the GI Bill®, there are also scholarships and financial aid available specifically for military families. Bellevue University proudly supports military spouses and dependents, offering opportunities that include:

  • The Wounded Warriors Scholarship for recipients of the Purple Heart.
  • The Military Preferred Tuition Rate of $250 per credit hour also applies to spouses of active-duty service members (for undergraduate courses).
  • The ability to transfer GI Bill® benefits to spouses and children opens up educational opportunities for your entire family.

At Bellevue, we’re just as committed to helping military spouses and family members succeed as we are to supporting active duty and retired military service members pursue a degree. We believe deeply that when one family member enlists, the whole family is eligible for preferred tuition rates and other opportunities to meet educational goals. Tips for Receiving Military Tuition Support

Navigating military education benefits can feel complex, but a few proactive steps can make the process much smoother. Here are some key tips to help you stay on track:

  • Start early. Begin your benefit application process well before your intended start date to allow time for paperwork, approvals, and processing.
  • Stay in touch with your ESO or VA representative. Regular communication helps ensure you’re meeting your branch’s requirements and timelines.
  • Submit your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) or VA Award Letter promptly. These documents are essential to securing your benefits before classes begin.
  • Connect with Bellevue University’s Military Veteran Services Center. Their team is dedicated to helping you navigate your options and stay on top of key deadlines.
  • Complete the Veterans Education Form (VEF) before the start of your term. This form is required each term and helps confirm your intent to use benefits for that period.
