Communication Studies Master's Program

The Bellevue University Communication Studies Master's program provides comprehensive education in many areas of human communication. The program addresses competencies in the areas of critical thinking, research, professional and social skills, diversity and intercultural communication, applied theory, leadership and emotional intelligence. The program is designed to produce graduates who can bridge the modern workplace communication gap, meet internal training and development needs, and identify and utilize effective skills to address important communication issues inherent in all work environments. In addition the program serves to prepare students who may seek education at the doctoral level.

The Communication Studies Master's program offers both the Master of Arts and the Master of Science degrees. The program provides a thesis or no-thesis option depending on the goals and aspirations of the student. The MA is a 38 hour degree program and the MS is a 41 hour degree program.

Classes are offered in the evening semester format. The introductory course is offered three times per year (fall, winter, spring); it is designed to orient the student to the basic theories, models, and methodologies of the field of human communication to prepare for success in the program.

The instructors in the program are experts in their fields and each provides multiple communication perspectives in four credit hour courses. Emphasis is given to the study of human communication.

Program Characteristics (38-41 hours)

  • Not accelerated cohort format - available course by course.
  • Four credit hour courses combine closely related communication areas.
  • Active learning through direct application of theory and study of communication in context.
  • Prepares student for career advancement as well as for doctoral work.



Master of Arts in Communication Studies

General Requirements

  • 22 credits of required core courses.
  • Sixteen hours of elective credit (no thesis option).
  • Twelve hours of elective credit (thesis option - must take four credits of thesis hours).
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive exam.



Master of Science in Communication Studies

Prerequisites

    MA 141 Introduction to Statistics (or equivalent)
    MA 241 Inferential Statistics and Data Analysis (or equivalent)

General Requirements
  • 22 credits of required core courses.
  • Twelve hours of elective credit.
  • Four credits of thesis hours.
  • MBA 522 Survey of Statistics and Quantitative Methods (three credits).
  • Thesis must be quantitative based.
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive exam.
