Enrollment Verification
how to verify your enrollment for student loan deferment
If you’ve requested a deferment on your student loans (a temporary pause on repayment while you’re enrolled), you may need to verify your enrollment status. Most lenders and loan servicers use the National Student Clearinghouse to confirm to lending agencies whether students are enrolled at least half-time and qualify for “in-school deferment.”
Approximately every 30 days, Bellevue University reports student enrollment status to the National Student Clearinghouse, which then provides verification to lending agencies.
Most participating lenders also use the Clearinghouse’s paperless deferment process. With this process:
- No paper forms need to be completed by either students or schools.
- You, the student borrower, simply call your loan servicer (lender) to request a deferment.
- The lender then posts a deferment to your student account (after your verbal request is matched against the Clearinghouse electronic data verifying your in-school status).
Bellevue University does not provide enrollment verification information directly to lending agencies.
If you registered late or had an exception processed to your term registration, your information may not be reported until the next monthly submission.
If you receive a collection letter from a servicer and you believe you should be in a deferred status, you should:
- Call your lending agency to see if they received a deferment form from the Clearinghouse after they sent you the collection letter.
- If the deferment has not been processed, call the Clearinghouse at 703-742-4200.
- A Clearinghouse representative can can confirm when your deferment was received and certified, and which lenders or guarantors were notified about your deferred status.
- If an emergency exists (e.g., you are being threatened with default), the Clearinghouse can In emergencies (for example, if you’re at risk of default), the Clearinghouse can fax another enrollment certification to your servicer and work with your servicer to ensure the form is processed on a high-priority basis.
