Understanding NAIA Eligibility: Your Guide to Transferring and Playing

Transferring schools as a student-athlete can feel like stepping into a whole new game. You’re not just choosing your next classes-you’re deciding where to continue your athletic career, build new connections, and prepare for life after graduation. The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) offers transfer-friendly policies and a focus on student success, helping student-athletes get back in the game faster while staying on track toward their degree.
Whether you’re wondering how eligibility works, what paperwork you’ll need, or how quickly you can compete again, this guide will walk you through what to expect and how to prepare. At Bellevue University, we understand how important this decision is. As a proud NAIA school–home to the BU Bruins–we’re here to support transfer student-athletes every step of the way.
Why Student-Athletes Transfer
The decision to transfer isn’t always easy, but it can be the best move for your future. Student-athletes transfer for many reasons, including:
- More playing time or a better fit with a coaching staff
- Access to a degree program that wasn’t offered at your previous school
- Moving closer to home or finding a more affordable education
- A university that supports both academic and athletic growth
Whatever your reason, Bellevue University’s combination of competitive athletics and transfer-friendly academic policies makes it an excellent landing spot.
What is the NAIA?
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics is the governing body for over 250 smaller colleges and universities across the United States. Unlike the NCAA, which is divided into three divisions (I, II, and III) based on factors like school size and athletic budget, the NAIA operates as a single-division organization. This structure allows for a more unified approach to competition and eligibility standards.
NAIA institutions tend to be smaller universities and colleges, which allows for more personalized attention and a community-focused environment. These schools often emphasize a balance between athletics, academics, and extracurricular activities, providing student-athletes with a well-rounded college experience.
The NAIA Eligibility Center
To compete in NAIA sports, student-athletes must register with the NAIA Eligibility Center. This centralized system manages the verification of academic records, athletic participation, and other eligibility requirements.
You can create an account and begin the registration process at PlayNAIA.org. Once registered, the Eligibility Center will guide you through submitting transcripts, test scores (if required), and other documentation. Monitoring your status through the center ensures your eligibility is verified before you start competing at your new school.
Key NAIA Transfer Rules Every Student-Athlete Should Know
Transferring to a new college as a student-athlete requires understanding NAIA rules to maintain eligibility and academic progress. Here’s a breakdown of the essential transfer criteria:
1. Credit Requirements & Academic Standing
To be immediately eligible to compete, transfer student-athletes must complete at least 24 semester hours (or 36 quarter hours) of institutional credit at their previous school. These credits must be transferable to the new institution.
In addition, you must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher across all colleges attended. This ensures that student-athletes meet minimum academic standards while continuing their athletic careers.
Learn more about eligibility requirements on the NAIA Eligibility Center website.
Two-year vs. Four-year Transfers:
- Transfers from two-year colleges generally meet eligibility rules once credit and GPA requirements are satisfied.
- Transfers from four-year colleges may also need to meet residency or release requirements (see below).
2. Residency & Transfer Release
- Residency Requirement: Residency rules are for athletes who have participated in collegiate sports at a four-year school. These rules mandate that the athlete must wait 16 weeks before participating in that sport at an NAIA school. There are a few exceptions for athletes who’ve met specific criteria.
- Mid-Year Transfers: Recent NAIA rules allow some student-athletes to compete immediately when transferring mid-year, provided they have a release from their previous institution.
- Transfer Release: A written release from your former school is typically required if you competed at a four-year institution.
3. Academic Progress & Maintaining Eligibility
Eligibility also depends on overall academic progress. As you move through your college career, you must continue accumulating credits according to NAIA standards:
- Before your 2nd season: 24 semester/36 quarter credits
- Before your 3rd season: 48 semester/72 quarter credits
- Before your 4th season: 72 semester/108 quarter credits (some must count toward your major or general education requirements)
Maintaining full-time enrollment and a 2.0+ GPA each semester is essential to stay eligible to compete. Coordination with your new school’s compliance and admissions offices is important to ensure all credits and paperwork meet NAIA standards.
Playing NAIA sports has given me the opportunity to succeed as a student while continuing to compete in the sport I love. The support and close-knit community of Bellevue University have helped me not only improve my athletic performance, but also grow to be a better person.
