The face of security has changed dramatically since 9/11,” according to Professor Greg Allen, Director of Bellevue University’s Security Management Program. “There is an urgency for more sophisticated security in the workplace now,” he adds, noting that demand is high for graduates of the University’s two new programs in security.
The online degree programs give professionals in the field the opportunity to build on their career experience while learning about current issues in homeland security, risk analysis, terrorism, and other timely issues. “Professionals in private security and law enforcement see the degrees as passports to opportunities in an expanding industry. The degrees are attracting members from the military, too,” Allen said. “They can apply credits already earned and military training to the bachelor’s degree core requirements and with the bachelor’s or master’s degree advance in the military, or transition out to a good, quality job in security.”
“Shortly after announcing the availabilities of these degrees we received inquiries from military personnel on duty in Iraq,” Allen said. “Right now a security director in Singapore is inquiring about signing up his entire management team.”
Interest in the programs also was high among the 17,000 attendees at the recent convention of the American Society of Industrial Security (A.S.I.S.), where Bellevue University distributed information about the degrees. “At one time, a certificate from A.S.I.S. was sufficient for individuals wanting to advance in corporate security, but today they also need that college degree,” Allen said. “We feel a real sense of fulfillment at Bellevue University because we know with these degrees we are responding to a need that adult students have.”
