Dean Christine Beischel, Ph.D., College of Distributed Learning
|
When Bellevue University was established nearly 40 years ago, the founders’ mission was to provide access to all students seeking higher education. This meant reaching out to traditional students and adults alike with degree programs, class schedules, and relevant career-building course content to meet their needs. When the Internet came on the scene, Bellevue University went online too to meet prospective students there.
This inspired move established Bellevue University as a leader in educating adults online. Since the time we first went online, Bellevue University has established “best practices” for interacting with students and assuring them the highest quality education online. We even established the College of Distributed Learning that is now led by Dean Christine Beischel. Dr. Beischel and her dedicated staff work diligently to continue to provide leading-edge services to the thousands of online students who rely on the College of Distributed Learning every day. Dr. Beischel describes her personal philosophy and professional goals for working with students online:
“Our goal is a smooth online learning experience, from first contact to inquire about the program through graduation. We enhance that with courteous, responsive, and professional one-on-one assistance,” Dr. Beischel said.
“Because the Internet is now second nature to our students, it is essential that it serve their learning needs well,” she said. “Our team is really phenomenal people wholly dedicated to making sure our students’ online learning experience is rich and rewarding and completely seamless. We offer 24/7 technical support, and encourage our students to contact us for anything they need to make their experience with us work optimally
for them.”
An important aspect of online learning is how the faculty teach online. A strength of Bellevue University’s College of Distributed Learning is every instructor is trained to teach in the college’s exclusive Cyber-Active® Learning Classrooms. They are encouraged to use the same instructional design and technical tools so the student’s experience doesn’t vary from course to course. “The technical tools at the instructors’ fingertips are the very latest available,” Dr. Beischel said. “We have staff in our department that keep up on Internet technology and bring leading-edge teaching tools to our faculty. When our students learn online with Bellevue University, it really is like they are transported to a classroom with professional peers and a professor who knows their names.
“We make the learning so seamless so interactive that we have online students come to our main campus in Nebraska every year for commencement primarily to meet people from their programs. The camaraderie that occurs online sparks lifelong relationships.
“There really is nothing like this. It is because of a college-wide commitment to giving every student we serve meaningful learning with real-life relevance whether they complete their degree in one of our classrooms or online.”
