Lithuanian Alum Returns Home, Still Teaches Online for Alma Mater
Lithuania native Jurgita Vizgirdaite earned her bachelor's degree in Communication Arts from Bellevue University in 2004, then her master's degree in Communication Studies in 2008. She's back home in Lithuania now, but works as an adjunct instructor for Bellevue University, teaching online communication courses for the College of Arts & Sciences.
What led you to attend Bellevue University as a student?
The emphasis that the university puts on diversity. The international student body ensures very enjoyable academic and social experiences.
What did you enjoy most about your experience as a Bellevue University student?
Being able to compare the European and the American teaching methods was beneficial. The emphasis that was put on practice and the approach of the projects via the real life prism made the learning more applicable to each student individually.
You're a college instructor in Lithuania now. Where and what do you teach?
I teach Business English and the English Language at the Vilnius College of Higher Education. I also teach the Fundamentals of Negotiation Skills at International Business School at Vilnius University. This is one of the oldest universities in northern Europe and the largest in Lithuania.
What's it like teaching an online course from overseas?
My classes usually include several people who are studying from different continents. How much we are able to accomplish with this environment inspires me and my students to learn not only from the course material, but also from our peers.
What do you enjoy most about teaching for the University?
Bellevue University is an award-winning leader in distance learning. Also the idea of being able to experience unique interactions and communication based on realistic examples. In addition, the online setting allows some participants to experience more in-depth conversations and build strong relationships with each other.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I look forward to spring and plan to be spending my weekends in different places of interest. I am also a fan of Lithuanian theater and music. I am a very frequent visitor of various plays, musicals, and concerts.
Any planned trips back to the United States?
Although no specific trips are planned at this point of time, I am sure that the nostalgia will soon expedite these plans.
