CAMPUS ALERT
October is National Cybersecurity Month
As technology advances and we become more reliant on the devices that have become part of our routines, the criminal element has followed along. Bellevue University is working to get the message out about responsible internet practices during National Cybersecurity Month. Ron Woerner, Director of Cybersecurity Studies discusses the importance of securing our networks, computers and smartphones.
Simple steps can help protect your cyber world. This includes:
- Keep your devices and apps current. Apply patches and updates to your applications and computers. This can be on your smart phone, a laptop, or a desktop computer.
- Protect your PI (personal information). Use a password, PIN, passphrase, or pattern to protect your accounts. This is especially true for your phone. The longer, the better, so consider using a passphrase rather than a password, such as "Mary had a little lamb."
- Connect with care. Think before you click on a link, respond to an email or text, or download the latest app. When in doubt, get out or throw it out.
- Be web wise. Know how to secure your devices and protect yourself. The staysafeonline.com website is a treasure trove of information.
