Military Veterans Services Center
Army General, Alum Evans Leads Celebration
Bellevue University celebrated the grand opening of its new Military Veteran Services Center on May 31, 2013. The Military Veteran Services Center (MVSC), located on the University’s main campus in Bellevue, Nebraska, provides resources and assistance to all current military and veteran students. United States Army Brigadier General and Bellevue University alum Jason T. Evans was the keynote speaker at the ribbon cutting ceremony.
“Bellevue University’s dedication to military students dates back to our founding when we located our campus near Offutt Air Force Base,” said Bellevue University President, Dr. Mary B. Hawkins. “Today, nearly 40 percent of our students are military-related and people utilizing the center will benefit from veterans who know how to help other veterans reach their educational and personal goals.”
The MVSC will offer a Military and Veteran Support Group which will help students dealing with issues related to their service and help them understand that they are not alone. The center also houses the University’s Student Veteran’s Organization, the University’s military outreach team and a dedicated Veterans Affairs representative.
A mentoring program is planned to bring alumni and current students together. There will also be a cyber café where students can work on resumes. In addition, local employers will be brought in to interact with students seeking employment.
General Evans has served in command and staff positions in the continental United States, Italy, Somalia, Kosovo, Germany and Iraq with the 13th Corps Support Command, III U.S. Corps, 510th Personnel Services Battalion, 1st Personnel Command, U.S. Army Europe, IMCOM, Multi-National Force -- Iraq, and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army. He attended Wentworth Military Academy where he earned an Associate Degree in Business Administration. He completed his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Bellevue University, Bellevue, Nebraska. He holds Masters Degrees in Business Administration and National Resource Strategy.
Recently Bellevue University was ranked third in the inaugural U.S. News Best Online Programs for Veterans Rankings in the category of best bachelor’s programs. The ranking touted the University’s excellent performance in four key programs that offer many educational benefits to people with military service. Those include: institutions to be certified for the GI Bill, participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program, be members of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges Consortium and offer at least one credit-granting bachelor’s-level course listed in the Defense Activities for Non-Traditional Education Support Catalog of Nationally Accredited Distance Learning Programs.
In addition to an unprecedented suite of Veteran services, the University also works with corporate partners to identify how Veterans transitioning to civilian life can help fill gaps in corporate knowledge and skills.
