University receives national designation from National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security

The National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) today announced that Bellevue University has been designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education. The designation followed a rigorous review by government, industry and academic officials. Designated centers are eligible to apply for scholarships and grants through the Department of Defense Information Assurance Scholarship Program and the National Science Foundation's Scholarship for Service Program. Officials lauded the University for offering innovative education programs that produce a well-trained and well-versed workforce to protect our nation's information infrastructure.

"This designation rewards our University-wide approach to offer the most relevant programs possible to our students," said Dr. Mary B. Hawkins, president Bellevue University. "The response to our submission cited several University strengths including a fine curriculum, expert faculty and noteworthy outreach."

According to the NSA and DHS, the Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education are key to helping the nation's security solutions keep pace with evolving technology and addressing the critical shortage of professionals needed to defend America's cyberspace.

Bellevue University offers a variety of security related programs, including the Master of Science in Cybersecurity, a program that has been rapidly growing since the Spring 2011 term, and the Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity, which will begin this fall. "The Bellevue University Cybersecurity program is a world class program combining both theory and practical hands on cases to immerse students in the world of Cybersecurity," said Ron Woerner, Director of Cybersecurity Studies at Bellevue University.

The designation was announced today at the Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education annual conference and remains in effect through the year 2017.

Bellevue University is a recognized national leader in providing post-secondary education opportunities for working adults.
