Sinkovics Earns Jersey City Fellowship
Recent grad survives rigorous screening process
Michelle Sinkovics, a recent graduate of Bellevue University’s Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) program, has earned an Administrative Fellowship at the Jersey City Medical Center. Sinkovics, an ultrasound technologist from Converse, Texas, will start the fellowship on June 1, 2013.
Sinkovics said the MHA program, combined with her work experience, leaves her confident she can tackle the challenges of the fellowship.
“I thought the MHA program was great, and the perfect stepping stone to further my career. The professors were great and extremely knowledgeable about their respective areas of healthcare administration,” she said. “I loved working with Dr. (Mike) Freel and Professor (Stephanie) LaPuma; they were always available to mentor and give advice, as well as push each student to excel. I thank them for motivating myself and the rest of my classmates to reach our goals.”
Bellevue University's Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) is designed to develop leadership skills applicable within any healthcare organization. The skills taught in this program have been identified by the Healthcare Leadership Alliance (HLA) as desirable for ensuring the quality delivery of healthcare within this dynamic industry.
As a part of the fellowship, Sinkovics will be mentored by various senior leaders throughout the organization and choose a project to manage in an area of administration that is of particular interest to her.
“I believe that given the current climate and changes within the healthcare industry, quality and safety are two areas that warrant specific attention,” she said.
Pursuing fellowship opportunities was a challenging process, Sinkovics said. She applied for 30 different fellowships, competing against over 100 applicants for each one. Among her competition were students from schools like Harvard, Yale, and Cornell.
Moving to the East Coast will present its own unique set of challenges as well.
“I have been to the area, but only for vacation and an ultrasound seminar I attended years ago,” Sinkovics said. “This will be a whole new experience for me. I should have weekends free to enjoy New York City (just 4 miles away), but I am unsure about public transportation, as a whole. Utilizing public (and more green) transportation is a foreign concept to someone who grew up in northern Indiana, lived in coastal Virginia, and currently lives outside the Texas sprawl in San Antonio.”
