Tankersley Recognized for Imaging Leadership
Ph.D. Candidate, MBA Alum Earns Accolades
It has been a very good year for Bellevue University alumnus Darin Tankersley of Sacramento, California. Tankersley, who earned an MBA from the University in 2007 and currently is in the dissertation phase of his Ph.D. in Human Capital Management (PCAP) degree, has been recognized three times by his employer, Kaiser Permanente, for his leadership and innovations in the field of medical imaging.
Tankersley, who joined the company five years ago, recently was appointed Director of Imaging Services at Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Service. He oversees six departments and is responsible for the operational, service and fiscal management of Imaging Services, a full-service, high-volume inpatient and outpatient imaging department at a Level II Trauma Center.
Oakland, California-based Kaiser Permanente (KP), an integrated managed care consortium, is the nation’s largest Health Management Organization (HMO), serving about 9 million members nationwide, nearly 7 million in the organization’s Northern and Southern California regions. The organization, which includes hospitals and medical offices in nine states and the District of Columbia, has more than 167,000 employees and 14,600 affiliated physicians.
In the past 12 months, Tankersley was named a KP Assistant Director of the Year (for the second consecutive year) in recognition of significant contributions to the Practice of Imaging in KP’s Northern California Region. He also received the organization’s Crystal Award for Outstanding Contributions in Imaging, for contributions supporting operational improvement in Kaiser Permanente Northern California Region Imaging. The third award, a Regional Imaging Star Award, recognized his efforts above and beyond expectations in providing support, guidance, and action for Northern California Imaging.
Why did he choose Bellevue University? “I lived in Bellevue for a few years and heard of the great reputation the University has. Once I decided to further my education, Bellevue University was where I wanted to go,” he said. “My MBA has given me a strong educational foundation allowing me to transition the knowledge I gained into positive organization outcomes and effectiveness.
“What initially intrigued me about the University’s Ph.D. program in Human Capital Management was that it is practitioner-focused. It allows the student to not only gain a scholarly understanding of the field, but insight into the practical application of theories and concepts within the field of human capital,” said Tankersley, one of seven alumni who are doctoral “candidates” currently writing their doctoral dissertations after completing the program curriculum and comprehensive exams.
“Working on a Ph.D. has been one of the most rewarding and challenging things I have done. It has given me greater understanding of the field of human capital as well as practical business applications for leveraging it. Through a great deal of research and intensive study provided in the program, I have gained both a scholarly and practical knowledge base.
Tankersley is keeping the focus on practicality as he writes his doctoral dissertation, which will deal with employee burnout. “With the upcoming challenges in the healthcare field, I am looking to continue to apply the knowledge I have gained from Bellevue University to the day-to-day operations within our Medical Center to help meet the demands of our industry.”
There currently are 64 students enrolled in the PCAP program, including 23 Bellevue University alumni. An additional cohort of about 25 Ph.D. students will begin their studies this fall.
