Bruin baseball team wins conference title, advances to national tournament opening round

The Bruin baseball team on Wednesday won the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament title, knocking off Park University in the championship game, 10-4. Bellevue University trailed 4-3 going into the bottom of the fifth inning before reeling off four runs and taking the lead for good. The 11th-ranked Bruins improve to 39-11 on the season.

With the win, Coach Mike Evans’ team advances to the NAIA National Tournament qualifying round, which begins May 12 at a site to-be-determined. Winners from qualifying rounds held nationwide move on to the Avista NAIA World Series May 22-29 in Lewiston, Idaho. Bellevue University has qualified for 12 of the past 14 World Series and won the national championship in 1995.

In Wednesday’s conference championship game, junior catcher Brett Chamberlain led the team at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs – part of 14 hits overall for the Bruins. Pitcher Kyle Wink earned the win to improve to 7-1 on the season.
