ISIS Student, Professor Honored
Crosston IAFIE Outstanding Instructor Award
Bellevue University graduate student Julie McNally and Program Director Dr. Matthew Crosston both received recognition for their work at the 8th International Conference on Information Warfare and Security. The event was held at Regis University in Denver, Colorado on March 25-26. “The International Conference on Information Warfare and Security 2013 was an impressive gathering of cyber security academics and professionals from the US, Russia, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and other far-flung places” McNally said. “Presenters tackled intriguing issues related to offensive cyber tools and operations, the legality of active defenses, and many timely topics that inspired lively discussion and debate about information security. From the discussions, I came away with an idea for a new research paper, so I can say the conference was definitely inspiring!”
McNally, a student in the ISIS program was not only accepted to give a full paper individual presentation (as opposed to a student poster presentation) at the ICIW, her paper made the official published proceedings. Her paper was titled: “Improving Public/Private Sector Cooperation on Cyber Event Reporting”.
Dr. Crosston’s work, “DUQU’S DILEMMA: The Ambiguity Assertion and the Futility of Sanitized Cyber War” was also in the official published proceedings. He also received some positive feedback from McNally, who commented, “The ISIS focus on rigorous research and analytical writing and the feedback and guidance from Prof. Crosston helped me develop my skills to reach my goal of publication.”
Crosston was recently named the Miller Endowed Chair for Industrial and International Security. That honor furthers the University’s efforts to contribute to the academic community as a research institution.
Additionally, Crosston has been selected as the 2013 International Association for Intelligence Education (IAFIE) Outstanding Instructor Award. In a letter about the award, the IAFIE stated that Crosston’s portfolio revealed his passionate commitment to excellence in teaching and curriculum design.
“It is a tremendous honor to be recognized globally by my peers. More importantly, this award is testimony to and affirmation for the unique approaches we took in designing and building the ISIS program, some of which were quite controversial at the time. Most importantly, it is recognition that our program stands equal to the best programs in the country without exception. Of that I am most proud for what it will ultimately mean for our students upon graduation and emerging into the real world” Crosston said.
IAFIE was formed in June 2004 as a result of a gathering of sixty plus intelligence studies trainers and educators at the Sixth Annual International Colloquium on Intelligence at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania. This group, from various intelligence disciplines including national security, law enforcement and competitive intelligence, recognized the need for a professional association that would span their diverse disciplines and provide a catalyst and resources for their development and that of Intelligence Studies. The Association now comprises nearly 500 members.
The award will be presented at the May 20-23, 2013, IAFIE annual meeting in El Paso, Texas. Crosston is the Program Director for Bellevue University’s Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in International Security and Intelligence Studies.
