Cybersecurity Student Earns AFCEA Scholarship
Bellevue education paying real-life benefits for Shuman
Kira Shuman, a student in Bellevue University’s Master of Science in Cybersecurity program, recently earned the AFCEA Cyber Security Graduate Scholarship. The $5,000 scholarship from The Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association is awarded to students enrolled full-time in degree-granting programs in fields directly related to the support of U.S. intelligence or homeland security enterprises, and/or foreign languages.
“I was thrilled to be selected from all of the candidates to receive a scholarship,” Shuman said. “AFCEA is such a well-known organization, and the award so important, I never expected I would be selected.”
Ron Woerner, director of Bellevue University’s Cybersecurity programs, praised his student.
“It’s exciting to see students like Kira succeed like this,” he said. “Her enthusiasm for the Cybersecurity program and the career field epitomizes the types of students we have at Bellevue University.”
Shuman earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Information Systems from Bellevue University in 2010. Her positive experience in that program influenced her decision on where to pursue her graduate degree.
“I know the standards and environment within Bellevue are excellent, and accommodate my busy lifestyle,” she said. “After reviewing the curriculum for the Master of Science in Cybersecurity, I found that it was not only applicable to my career field, but piqued my interest.”
An IT Specialist in Information Security for the United States Government, Shuman’s Bellevue education has already been paying dividends.
“I have seen my work performance and understanding increase exponentially in the time I have attended Bellevue. I cannot say enough about the focus of the program and the knowledge I have gained here,” she said. “Every course has been directly applicable to my work, and I often find myself on a project for work that references knowledge I just gained in one of my classes.”
