Bellevue University First to Market with New
Flexxive℠ makes higher education more affordable, accessible
Bellevue University, an award-winning leader in educating adult learners, today launched Flexxive℠, the first-of-its-kind, skill-based learning model that offers unprecedented affordability and flexibility to students. By being the first to market with this revolutionary model, Bellevue University continues to lead the nation in addressing many problems facing higher education in the United States—including the rising cost of college, increasing student debt and lack of readiness of graduates to apply their skills in the workplace.
"Earning a college degree has never been more important than it is right now," said Dr. Mary B. Hawkins, President of Bellevue University. "Over the next 10 years, nearly half of all new jobs will require a level of education beyond a high school degree. Flexxive℠ is designed to provide an affordable and accessible alternative to those looking to further their education in order to compete in the job market of the future."
Tuition and fees have increased by almost 130 percent at some institutions in the last 20 years, according to the College Board. The Flexxive℠ model allows students to earn a degree for $250 per credit hour, a significantly lower cost compared with existing traditional and online programs. Flexxive℠ will also offer classes to students at a flat-rate price when they take more than 12 semester hours per term, allowing students to take more classes without paying more tuition. The model offers students additional savings by having all required readings available online, meaning students will not have to purchase books.
While the cost of higher education is a barrier preventing many from obtaining a degree, 35 percent of Americans reported they don't have the time to get everything done in their lives and go to school, according to a recent Bellevue University study. Flexxive℠ will offer unprecedented flexibility to students, a radical departure from traditional models that require students to attend classes on a set schedule. Students will be able to learn anytime and anywhere by using their tablet, laptop, or desktop devices, making Flexxive℠ the first learning model designed to fully leverage the use of mobile devices.
"Working adults need the flexibility to learn at their own pace and on their own terms," Dr. Hawkins said. "Higher education must be innovative and adapt to the needs of the students, instead of expecting students to adapt to the institution, which limits accessibility for the working adults that comprise nearly half of U.S. college students."
The unparalleled flexibility of Bellevue University's new learning model allows students to personalize their experience by progressing at their own pace during six-month terms. Students will move quickly through areas of strength and build new skills at their own pace, which differs from other learning models that allow students to advance without really gaining the skills needed for future success.
This student-centric philosophy is supported by Flexxive's℠ Instructional Team as well as the personalized experience that students will receive. The Instructional Team will carefully monitor student progress and performance while supporting students every step of the way. If students have questions about the program, or need advice when "life" gets in the way, the Instructional Team will be there to provide guidance. While engaged in the model's mastery-based curriculum, students will develop the skills employers demand: critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, innovation, professionalism and communication.
"It's not about just getting a degree. It's about getting a degree that is relevant and affordable," Dr. Hawkins said. "The average college graduate leaves school owing more than $20,000 in student loans. Americans need to focus on getting degrees that will translate into employment."
With the skills that employers demand in mind, Bellevue University's Flexxive℠ has flipped the traditional education model that focuses on time, with mastery of skills being the new focus. Through Flexxive℠, time will be the variable, with mastery of skills being the constant, as students will continue working on a skill until they demonstrate mastery of that skill.
Bellevue University designed the Flexxive℠ learning model with America's workforce in mind. Essential skills are embedded into the Flexxive℠ experience. Through research conducted by Bellevue University, many of these skills were identified as being critical to an individual's success in the job market, both today and in the future.
The first Flexxive℠ degree to be offered is our new Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA). Other majors will be offered under this model in the future. For more information, visit www.Bellevue.edu/flexxive.
