International Update
Tax Assistance on Campus
Wednesday, February 22, 2012
All international students are required to file certain tax forms, even if you never worked. In addition, international students are not allowed to file U.S. taxes electronically if you are a nonresident for tax purposes. Doing so could lead to serious problems. Software programs such as TurboTax will not prevent you from filing electronically. It is your responsibility to know that this is not allowed. All nonresidents must complete and mail paper forms.
The due date for filing tax forms is April 17, 2012.
Bellevue University is hosting a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site for nonresident tax payers. The Bellevue University International Programs Department is coordinating this program along with the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Any person who is considered a nonresident for tax purposes is welcome, and most international students are in this category. Please remember that all F-1 visa holders and their F-2 dependents that were in the U.S. in 2011 MUST file documentation with the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Tax filing is required of all international students, even if you did not work or receive a scholarship from a U.S. source. If you did not have U.S. income in 2011, you will only need to complete Form 8843.
Trained and certified VITA Volunteers will be available to assist International Students in completing the Nonresident Alien Tax Returns (1040NR-EZ and 1040NR) and the required Form 8843.
If you need help filing your required tax forms, you may come to one of the Nonresident Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Sessions listed below:
