Note

  • French, German, and Spanish are available as CLEP exams and, thus, may not be taken through NYU.
  • Please check with your academic advisor prior to taking any of these exams to ensure the test meets your degree requirements.
  • The entire process of requesting, ordering, administering, scoring, and receiving results may take up to 16 weeks.
  • All tests fulfill lower level credit, do not affect your GPA, and do not count toward the 60-hours of in-residence credits required to be eligible for honors.

NYU Foreign Language Proficiency exams need to be ordered from NYU by the Test Center. Thus, to take an exam, you will first set up a consultation time with the Test Center by phone, fax, email, or in person at:

Once we have received the exam, you must schedule and take the exam within the next four weeks. Most NYU Foreign Language Proficiency exams consist of four components:

  • Listening Skills
A brief recorded passage in the language of the examination will be played, followed by a series of questions, which you answer by writing in the language of the exam. The recording is played only once, but may be paused as needed.
  • Composition
You will produce a composition of approximately 150 words in the language of the exam.
  • Translation to English
You will translate a passage from the test language into English.
  • Translation from English
You will translate a passage from English into the test language.

All exams are timed and must be completed within two hours.

Scoring and Results

When you have completed the exam your answers are forwarded to NYU for scoring. Within six weeks, New York University returns the scored results to the Test Center and to you. Each point awarded demonstrates learning equivalent to one college-level credit. The first four points earned are awarded credit at the 101 level, the next four points are awarded credit at the 102 level, and the last four points are awarded credit at the 201 level. For example, if you were to score a five, you would be awarded (4) 101-level credits and (1) 102-level credit. If you scored 11, you would be awarded (4) 101-level credits, (4) 102-level credits and (3) 201-level credits. If you are unhappy with the score you receive, you must wait 180 days before you retake the exam in the same language.
