Academic Suspension
Description: Status results in not improving GPA after being placed on Probation. Students may appeal to continue within 30 days of notification, or wait out 12 month Suspension period.
Academic Warning

Access - Text Network
Description: A membership exchange network of publishers, higher education institutes, and alternative media providers, which facilitates and supports the nationwide delivery of alternative textbooks in higher education.
Access Board
Description: Federal agency that develops and publishes guidelines for access, such as the Americans with Disability Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG).
Accessibility
Description: The degree to which resources, services, or an environment can be utilized by all individuals.
Accommodation Letter
Description: A letter of verification (supplied to faculty upon student request) validating a student's need for accommodations.
ADA Statement
Description: The statement supplied by Disability Services, required in all University syllabi, which provides general information about available services to students with disabilities.
Advocacy
Description: The support of an individual in regards to a specific issue of concern. Disability Services encourages students to be self-advocates regarding their disabilities. Disability Services is an advocate for students, as well as the campus community, regarding disability issues.
Affidavit of Support
Abbreviation: AFFIDAVIT
Description: A form used by a sponsor to show financial support for an international student.
Aggregate & Annual Loan Limits

Aggregator
Description: A bibliographic service that provides online access to the digital full-text of periodicals published by different publishers. Currently, the top three journal aggregators in the United States are EBSCO, ProQuest and Thomson Gale.
Alternative Formats
Description: Course texts and other materials (i.e. handouts, notes, and PowerPoints) that are put into an accessible format for students with disabilities. Such a format may include Word/Pdf files, Braille documents, books on tape, mp3 files, etc.

Description: Text that describes a figure, chart, graph, or other image in a document not otherwise captioned or described.
Amendments Act of 2008
Abbreviation: ADAAA
Description: An act which took effect in January of 2009, that expanded the definition of disability, and allows other categories of disability (than those identified via the ADA Act of 1990) to be eligible for accommodations and protected from discrimination.
American Sign Language
Abbreviation: ASL
Description: The dominant language used among deaf Americans, with communication being facilitated through sign made with the hands, and sometimes incorporating body posture and facial expression.
Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990
Abbreviation: ADA
Description: A civil rights law intended to provide equal access and opportunity for people with a disability. The ADA makes it illegal to discriminate against anyone who has a mental or physical disability, in the area of employment, public services, transportation, public accommodations, and telecommunications.
Anthology
Description: A collection of extracts or complete works by various authors, selected by an editor for publication in a single volume or multivolume set. Anthologies are often limited to a specific literary form or genre (short stories, poetry, plays) or to a national literature, theme, time period, or category of author.
APA Style
Description: A guide for typing research papers in the social sciences, developed by the American Psychological Association, which includes the proper format for typing notes and bibliographic citations.
Archives
Description: An organized body of documents made or received in connection with the function of the institution or the library. Archives are maintained and preserved as a part of the record-keeping process and usually collected in a separate physical location.
Articulations
Description: Bellevue University has articulation agreements with several U.S. colleges and institutions and with universities abroad. These agreements allow students graduating with transfer courses or degrees in technical, career, or liberal arts fields to transfer directly to Bellevue University to complete a baccalaureate degree program.
Asperger's Syndrome
Description: A form of autism, generally characterized by difficulties in the areas of social communication, social interaction, and social imagination.
Assistive (Adaptive) Technology
Description: Any of a wide range of devices through which individuals with disabilities are able to gain access otherwise unavailable to them, i.e. hearing aid, literacy software, screen reader, screen magnifier, adapted vehicles, etc.

Description: An organization that provides information about disability services in post-secondary education throughout the world. This association communicates best practices and research related to disability services.
Asylum
Abbreviation: ASYLUM
Description: A status provided by the U.S. government to a person who shows that it is likely they would be persecuted or harmed in their home country because of membership in a political or religious group.
Attendance Verification (Hold)
Description: All classes must be attendance verified by student's instructor(s) in order for financial disbursements to occur. (i.e. Financial Aid, Book Grants, Scholarships, etc.)
Attention Deficit Disorder
Abbreviation: ADD
Description: Many people use the term ADD as a generic term for all types of ADHD. Whether we call it ADD or ADHD, however, we are all basically referring to the same thing.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Abbreviation: ADHD
Description: ADHD is broken down into three different subtypes: Combined Type, Predominantly Inattentive Type, and Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type. Diagnosis applied to children and adults who consistently display certain characteristic behaviors over a period of time.

Authentication
Description: In online systems, the procedure for verifying the integrity of a transmitted message. Also, a securityprocedure designed to verify that the authorization code entered by a user to gain access to a network or system is valid.

Back File
Description: All the issues of a periodical that precede the current issue; usually bound in annual volumes or converted to microfilm or microfiche to conserve space. In the catalog record, the extent of the back file is indicated in the holdings statement.
Barcode
Description: A printed label containing machine-readable data encoded in vertical lines of equal length but variable thickness, which can be read into an attached computer by an optical scanner. In libraries barcodes are used to identify books and other materials for circulation and inventory and to link the borrower's library card to the appropriate patron record in automated circulation systems. New users of the Bellevue University library must register and obtain a library barcode sticker that goes on the back of their student or employee I.D.

Abbreviation: BUILD IT
Description: BUILD IT is an interactive online tutorial that serves as a complete guide to the BU Library and all its resources and services. It consists of five modules which provide information about how to access and use these resources.

Bibliographic Instruction
Description: Library instructional class sessions taught by library staff members designed to teach library users how to quickly and effectively locate the information they need. During a bibliographic instruction session, students become aware of what resources are available for use in the library; being introduced to database searching, the online catalog, and other indexes as they exist in different formats such as electronic or print. Students are also taught information literacy, wherein students learn how to evaluate the quality and reliability of the information they find.
Blackboard
Abbreviation: Bb
Description: The required online component for all Bellevue University courses. This online classroom consists of syllabi, discussion boards, grade books, email functions, assignment uploads, course materials, etc. Also known as "Blackboard."
Blind/Low Vision
Description: A disability characterized by the complete inability to see, or by minimal vision, which cannot be corrected.
Book Charge
Description: Students using a Book Waiver or Book Grant will see the amount of the book charge on their student account. The receipt of financial aid (loans, grants, scholarships), book grant, or employee sponsored payments will subsequently pay the book charge.
Book Grant
Description: Discretionary funding provided by the office of Enrollment to aid in the purchase of books at the BU Bookstore. The disbursement of funding will be applied to a student's account in alignment with the schedule for Financial Aid.
Book Waiver
Description: This waiver is provided to students that have excess Financial Aid (FA) funding beyond tuition/fees, and they wish to charge their textbooks to their student accounts. Use of the waiver is only available at the Bellevue University Bookstore. An electronic submission is only granted if the student accepts their FA award funding and a Student Financial Counselor confirms eligibility, and processes the request.
Boolean
Description: A system of logic developed by the English mathematician George Boole (1815-64) that allows the user to combine words or phrases representing significant concepts when searching an online catalog or bibliographic database by keywords. Three logical commands (sometimes called "operators") are available in most search software: the OR command is used to expand retrieval by including synonyms and related terms in the query (example: violence OR conflict OR aggression). The AND command is used to narrow search results; each time another concept is added using "and," the search becomes more specific (example: violence AND television AND children). The NOT command is used to exclude unwanted records from search results (example: television NOT news).
Bound Periodical Collection
Description: The library collection that contains the oldest print issues of magazines and journals. For preservation, the older issues of a journal or magazine are consecutively placed together between two hard covers, resembling a book. The Bound Periodical Collection is located on the robotic shelving in the far southeast corner of the library.
Braille
Description: A system through which many blind users are able to read and write through the translation of tactile information.
Brief Record
Description: An abbreviated display of a bibliographic record in an online catalog or database, omitting data elements contained in some of the less essential fields and subfields, in contrast to the full record providing a complete bibliographic description of the item.
Bruin Experience Course Packages
Description: General Education courses packaged together and planned out for first-year incoming students. The purpose of the packages is to increase their connection to classmates and campus, which will help them succeed academically and socially.
BRUIN Mail
Description: Your lifetime Bellevue University email address; all University correspondence is sent to this account.
BRUIN Week
Description: A wide variety of events on campus ranging from movies and music to a mechanical bull and carnival, occurring during the first week of Fall, Winter, and Spring terms. Open to all new and continuing students.

Call Numbers
Description: A set of letters and numbers used to locate and catalog books. BU Library uses the Library of Congress Call Numbers. The first line is made up of 1-3 letters identifying the overall section, and is the starting point for finding a book's location. The second line is made up of numbers narrowing down a book's section and subject. The third line starts with a decimal point, and must be read as such (Q1.7 would come after Q1.134). The letters and numbers following these further narrow down a book's section, with the letter standing for the first letter of the author's last name. Any additional lines indicate the publication year, volume number, etc.
Captioning
Description: The display of textual content alongside a visual representation intended to allow access to those unable to access the audible information contained in such a representation.

Catalog (Library)
Description: A comprehensive list of the books, periodicals, maps, and other materials in a given collection, arranged in systemic order to facilitate retrieval (usually alphabetically by author, title, and/or subject). In most modern libraries, the card catalog has been converted to machine-readable bibliographic records and is available online. The purpose of a library catalog, as stated by Charles C. Cutter in Rules for a Dictionary Catalog (1904), later modified by Bohdan S. Wynar in Introduction to Cataloging and Classification (8th ed., 1992), is to offer the user a variety of approaches or access points to the information contained in the collection.
CD-Rom
Description: An abbreviation for Compact Disc-Read Only Memory. A compact disc that is used with a computer (rather than an audio system); a large amount of digital information can be stored and accessed by the user, but it cannot be altered.
Censorship
Description: Prohibition of the production, distribution, circulation, or display of a work by a governing authority on grounds that it contains objectionable or dangerous material. The person who decides what is to be prohibited is called a censor. Commonly used methods include decree and confiscation, legislation, prepressive taxation, and licensing to grant or restrict the right to publish.
Certificate of Eligibility
Abbreviation: COE
Description: This letter is issued to students using VA educationally benefits by the Department of Veteran Affairs to inform them of the amount they are entitled to receive in veteran education benefits.
Champions of Character
Description: A way to demonstrate character through conduct and competition so student athletes know, do, and value the right thing in all areas of life.
Change of Status
Abbreviation: COS
Description: U.S. Immigration allows international students to change their status due to marriage, business employment, etc. Please check with International programs for more information.
Charge
Description: To record the loan of a book or other item from the circulating collection of a library to a borrower. In modern libraries, this task involves the use of a computer. Also refers to the library's record of such a transaction, including the identity of the borrower, the title and call number of the item, and its due date.
Chronic condition
Description: A condition with ongoing implications; such an illness affects an individual for prolonged periods of time.
Circulating Collection
Description: Books and other materials that may be checked out by registered borrowers for use inside or outside the library. In most academic and public libraries in the U.S., circulating materials are shelved in open stacks to facilitate browsing.
Citation
Description: A reference to a text or publication that includes the bibliographic information: the author, title, name of journal or name of publisher, date, pages, volumes and other information that is necessary to locate a book, magazine or journal article, or some other material.
Class Schedule
Description: A listing of upcoming course offerings during any specified term. Available in both print and PDF formats.
Closed Captioned
Abbreviation: CC
Description: Film allows people with hearing disabilities to view the program as text on the screen.
Cohort Format
Description: Calendar designated for entire degree upfront; no need to register each term; student is enrolled into calendar courses upfront and must be taken as outlined. Additionally, the cohort model locks in the tuition rate when students enroll which is honored throughout their calendar so as long as a student does not drop. Students participating on cohort programs will remain with the same group of students throughout the program.

Description: Bellevue University streams the Commencement live so those who cannot attend still have an opportunity to watch their graduate walk across the stage.

Description: Commencement Ceremony DVDs will be available for purchase approximately four weeks after each ceremony.

Description: Signifies the top Athletic Department within the conference based on performances of all athletic programs.
Common Origination and Disbursement System
Abbreviation: COD
Description: The system through which Federal Pell Grant (Pell Grant) and William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) awards are processed.
Community User Card
Description: A card which is purchased by a non-student to allow them to use the library resources for one year.
Compact Shelving
Description: Library shelving designed to maximize the storage capacity of a given space by incorporating movable elements such as shelf ranges on tracks.
Compassionate Withdrawl
Description: A request that may be made in extraordinary cases in which a signification personal situation prevents a student from continuing in classes in a particular term, and for which an arrangement with instructors for an extension or incomplete grade is not possible. A compassionate withdrawal is not intended to apply in situations of chronic or ongoing medical, emotional, or psychological distress.

Description: A tutor who specializes in specific concepts within computer based courses.
Computer Proficiency Tests
Abbreviation: CPT
Description: Computer Proficiency Tests are 12 tests that assess a student's proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite 2007 applications.
Confidentiality
Description: An ethical principle which is an essential aspect of the function of Disability Services. Information regarding student situations is considered private, and is not released without authorization, or without a "need-to-know" basis.
Consortium
Description: An association of independent libraries and/or library systems established by formal agreement, usually for the purpose of sharing. Membership may be restricted to a specific geographic region, type of library (public, academic, special), or subject specialization.
Copyright
Description: The exclusive legal rights granted by a government to an author, editor, compiler, composer, playwright, publisher, or distributor to publish, sell, or distribute copies of a literary, musical, dramatic, artistic, or other work, within certain limitations (fair use and first sale). Copyright law also governs the right to prepare derivitive works, reproduce a work or proportions of it, and display or perform a work in public. Such rights may be transferred or sold to others and do not necessarily pass with ownership of the work itself. Copyright protects a work in the specific form in which it is created; not the idea, theme, or concept expressed in the work, which other writers are free to interpret in a different way. A work never copyrighted or no longer protected by copyright is said to be in the public domain.

Abbreviation: CCC
Description: A website to inform users on basic copyright information as well as providing a service to request copyright permissions.
Correspondence Test
Description: The Bellevue University Test Center offers the service of testing to members of our community who are enrolled in a program at another educational institution.
Course Catalog
Description: The document to consult regarding all academic and operational policies, degree requirements, program options, course descriptions, academic calendars, campus locations, faculty information, etc.
Course Evaluation
Description: A survey sent to your Bellevue Email near the conclusion of each course. This survey is a student's opportunity to provide feedback on the course content and instructor that will be evaluated by the College.
Course Numbers
Description: The combination of two or three letters and three numbers that reference the academic discipline, the specific course, and the level of rigor.
Cross Reference
Description: A term used in catalogs, thesauruses, and indexes that leads to another term or name where additional or similar information may be found as in "Use" or "See Also" (example: Computer Programs - See Also under topical headings and titles of actual software programs).
Curricular Practical Training
Abbreviation: CPT
Description: Curricular Practical Training is an internship whereby an international student can gain practical work experience in their field of study. Eligibility requires that the experience be an integral part of the student's degree program.
Customs & Border Protection
Abbreviation: CBP
Description: U.S. Customs and Border Protection is responsible for immigration inspections at U.S. ports of entry.
Cyberactive Blackboard
Description: The required online component for all Bellevue University courses. This online classroom consists of syllabi, discussion boards, grade books, email functions, assignment uploads, course materials, etc. Also known as "Blackboard."
D
Database
Description: A collection of organized information. The library's online catalog is a database of the library's holdings. In an effort to support the university's curriculum, the library also subscribes to several electronic databases, such as EBSCOhost's Business Source Complete and ProQuest's PsychARTICLES, which contain thousands of journal titles and full-text articles for student research.
Deaf/Hard of Hearing
Description: Individuals who are unable to, or have difficulties with perceiving audible information.
Debt Collection Letter
Description: Is received by the student or Bellevue University when the Department of Veteran Affairs has determined there is an overpayment of VA Education benefits. The amount of the debt must be repaid to the Department of Veteran Affairs.
Deferral Option
Abbreviation: DA
Description: Payment is made directly to student from their employer and in turn, is responsible to pay Bellevue University directly. This option applies if a student uses corporate reimbursement, Montgomery BI Bill, or Military Top-Up (TATU). New DA form must be turn in every fiscal year.
Degree Plan (Evaluation)
Description: This evaluation is not final, but provides student with a copy of the required courses for their program along with recommended courses as a starting point.
Desensitization
Description: The process of deactivating the magnetic stip affixed to a book or other printed item to prevent the security alarm from sounding when the borrower exits the library. This step is performed by the circulation staff when the item is checked out, using a device called a desensitizer.
Designated School Official
Abbreviation: DSO
Description: A school official approved by the Dept. of Homeland Security to issue I-20's and to assist in other immigration matters with F-1 students.
Digital Archives
Description: Archival materials that have been converted to machine-readable format; usually for the sake of preservation or to make them more accessible to users.
Diploma
Description: The ceremonial certificate awarded upon Conferral of a degree. Consists of University, College, and Major information.
Disability
Description: A physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity.
Discharge
Description: In circulation, to cancel the record of a loan upon the return of the borrowed item and payment of any overdue fine.
Document Delivery Service
Abbreviation: DDS
Description: The provision of published or unpublished documents in hard copy, microform, or digital format, usually for a fixed fee upon request. In most libraries, document delivery service is provided by the interlibrary loan office on a cost-recovery basis. The patron is usually required to pick up printed material at the library, but electronic full-text may be forwarded via e-mail. Also refers to the physical or electronic delivery of documents from a library collection to the residence or place of business of a library user upon request.
Duration of Status
Abbreviation: D/S
Description: The time during which an F-1 student is pursuing a full-time course of studies or engaging in authorized practical training following completion of studies. The D/S stamp is placed on the student's I-94 by the port of entry official.

EBSCOhost
Description: A powerful online reference system accessible via the Internet. It offers a variety of proprietary full text databases and popular databases from leading information providers. The databases range from general reference collections to specially designed, subject-specific databases for public, academic, medical, corporate, and school libraries.
eCatalog
Description: Our library catalog, eCatalog, allows you to search for all the print and electronic holdings in the Library.
Economic Hardship Work Authorization
Abbreviation: WORKPERMIT
Description: F-1 students experiencing unforeseen and unexpected economic hardship may apply for work authorization based on economic hardship. Please check with International Programs for further details.
ELA
Description: Acronym for Experiential Learning Assessment.
ELA Portfolio
Description: Collection of documentation that provides evidence of a student's prior learning activities and experience. The portfolio is reviewed by a Faculty Evaluator to determine what, if any, college credit will be awarded to the student. Portfolio requirements are specified in the ELA Student Guide.
Electronic Book
Abbreviation: E-Book
Description: A book that is produced in digital format, whether accessed via the Internet or from one of the library's e-book databases, such as ebrary and NetLibrary.
Electronic Journal
Abbreviation: E-Journal
Description: A journal that is produced in digital format, whether accessed via the Internet or from one of the library's e-journal databases, such as ProQuest's PsychARTICLES.
Electronic Reserve System
Abbreviation: Eres
Description: Bellevue University Library's electronic reserve system brought to you by SirsiDynix.
Embargo
Description: The period during which the articles published in a periodical are not available in online full-text from a journal aggregator, usually the most recent one to three years. Journal publishers have established such periods to prevent libraries from cancelling print subscriptions. In most periodical databases, this restriction applies only to a small proportion of the titles indexed, but in JSTOR nearly all of the journals are embargoed. Not to be confused with an exclusive agreement between a journal publisher and an aggregator.
Embedded
Description: An informational database accessible from within another software application, such as Microsoft Office 2003, which includes a feature enabling users to highlight words or phrases in their document or select a "look up" option to open a research window and enter keyword(s) in a data entry box, then select the source or service they wish to search. Microsoft has contracted with third-party content providers to incorporate some sources (Encarta Encyclopedia, dictionaries, and a thesaurus) directly into its applications. Other providers, such as Factiva, LexisNexis, and Gale, provide some free information normally retrievable only by logging on to their proprietary sites, with additional information available for a fee. In most cases, users must pay for full-text with a credit card if they do not have access to an institutional subscription. The main advantage of embedded databases is convenience to the user.

Description: Assists all new students in the Admissions process to successfully enroll into desired course(s)/program. This is your initial point of contact.
Enrollment Evaluation
Description: Survey requesting feedback based on the overall student experience with your Enrollment Counselor, Student Financial Counselor, and other offices that you may have encountered prior to completing your enrollment.
Episodic Impairment
Description: Refers to disabilities that impact an individual from time-to-time, i.e. a seizure disorder.
e-Services
Description: A portal of BRUIN where students can access academic and administrative forms.
E-text
Description: Short electronic text. E-text refers to textual information that is available in an electronic format, in which the information is text-based.
Estimated Honors
Description: Graduation honors are awarded to undergraduate students who have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours at Bellevue University and have a cumulative GPA of 3.60 and above. To be eligible for honors at graduation, undergraduate students must complete a minimum of 60 credit hours at Bellevue University.
EZProxy
Description: The proxy software used to allow off-campus users to authenticate and use Library resources from remote locations.

F-1 Student Visa

Description: A dedicated computer that functions as a security boundary, blocking traffic from one part of a network to another, usually the transmission of data from a larger network to a local area network. Firewalls are installed to restrict access to private computer network(s) and proprietary files by screening incoming traffic and denying access to unauthorized users. They also help prevent confidential information from passing out.

Footnote
Description: A brief note at the bottom of a page explaining or expanding upon a point in the text or indicating the source of a quotation or idea attributed by the author to another person. Footnotes are indicated in the text by an arabic numeral in superscript, or a reference mark, and are usually printed in a smaller size of the font used for the text. When numbered, the sequence usually starts with 1 at the beginning of each chapter but may occasionally start with 1 at the beginning of each page.

General Collection
Description: The largest collection in the library containing books and CD-ROMs that can be loaned out to students. The books can be found among the robotic stacks along the north and west walls of the library. Information Literacy
Description: Information Literacy is the set of skills needed to find, retrieve, analyze, and use information. In today's world, information comes to individuals in unfiltered formats, raising questions about its authenticity, validity, and reliability. The teaching of information literacy skills by library staff via bibliographic instruction and one-on-one tutoring enables students to assume greater control over their own learning. Information literacy instruction helps students to access needed information effectively and efficiently, evaluate information and its sources critically, incorporate selected information into one's knowledge base, understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, and access and use information ethically and legally.
Information Release Form

Institutional Student Information Record

Description: ISIR's contain processed student information reported on the Free Application for Federal Student AID (FAFSA) as well as key processing results and National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) financial aid history information. Integrated Library System

Description: An enterprise resource planning system for a library, used to track items owned, orders made, bills paid, and patrons who have borrowed library items. Bellevue University Library's ILS is SirsiDynix Symphony Workflows.
Intellectual Freedom
Description: The right under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution of any person to read or express views that may be unpopular or offensive to some people, within certain limitations (libel, slander, etc.). Legal cases concerning free speech issues are heard by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Intelligence Community (IC) Scholar Program
Description: This federal program develops students in the areas of international and cultural issues, foreign languages, analysis, and the critical thinking skills required to serve the sixteen federal agencies that make up the U.S. Intelligence Community. Students in the program may be selected for travel to Washington, D.C., participation in special simulations, and internships. Note: It is not a scholarship.
Interlibrary Loan
Abbreviation: ILL
Description: Is a service whereby a user of one library can borrow books or receive photocopies of documents that are owned by another library. The user makes a request with their local library, which, acting as an intermediary, identifies owners of the desired item, places the request, receives the item, makes it available to the user, and arranges for its return. Although books and journal articles are the most frequently requested items, some libraries will lend audio recordings, video recordings, maps, sheet music, and microforms of all kinds. In many cases, nominal fees accompany interlibrary loan services.
International Standard Book Number
Abbreviation: ISBN
Description: An ISBN is a number, not a bar code. It is a 13-digit number that uniquely identifies books and book-like products, such as audiobooks. The purpose of the ISBN is to establish and identify one title or edition of a title from one specific publisher and is unique to that edition, allowing for more efficient marketing of products by booksellers, libraries, universities, wholesalers and distributors. For more than thirty years, ISBNs were 10 digits long. However, to alleviate numbering shortages in certain parts of the world, on January 1, 2007, the ISBN system switched to a 13-digit format. Now all ISBNs are 13-digits long. Items having 10-digit ISBNs can be converted to the 13-digit format using the ISBN converter found at http://www.isbn.org/converterpub.asp.
International Standard Serial Number

Description: An eight-digit number assigned to serial publications (journals, magazines, etc.) to identify them. Each ISSN is specific to a serial's title and identifies all volumes under that title by the same ISSN number.
International Student Hold
Description: An indicator on a student record signifying their status as an International Student. This indicator is used for reporting and to regulate registration activity as a requirement of Federal Immigration guidelines.
Internship
Description: On-the-job work experience to complement a student's classroom experience. Can be paid/unpaid and/or completed for academic credit.
InterviewStream

IRS Data Retrieval
Description: Tool that imports tax information from the IRS into the Student's FAFSA. Description: An integrated set of online applications providing access to course assignments and materials, tests and test results, e-discussion and chat space, and other features in support of education, particularly in colleges and universities. Learning management systems offer some functions that overlap with library systems, such as the provision of electronic reserves, and their content may overlap with that delivered through library portals.

Description: A system of classifying books and other library materials developed and maintained over the last 200 years by the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. In LCC, human knowledge is divided into 20 broad categories indicated by single letters of the roman alphabet, with major subdivisions indicated by a second letter, and narrower subdivisions by decimal numbers and further alphabetic notation.

Description: The Library of Congress subject headings system was originally designed as a controlled vocabulary for representing the subject and form of the books and serials in the Library of Congress collection, with the purpose of providing subject access points to the bibliographic records contained in the Library of Congress catalogs.
Licensing Agreement
Description: A formal written contract between a library and a vendor for the lease of one or more proprietary (copyrighted) bibliographic databases or online resources, usually for a fixed period of time in exchange for payment of an annual subscription fee or per-search charge. Vendors typically charge libraries on a sliding scale based on number of registered borrowers or FTE enrollment, number of institutions or facilities served, and number of simultaneous users. Most licensing agreements limit remote access to authorized users.
Link Resolver
Description: Application software that uses the OpenURL standard to provide context-sensitive linking between a citation in a bibliographic database and the electronic full text of the resource cited (article, essay, conference paper, book, etc.) in an aggregator database or online from the publisher, taking into account which materials the user is authorized by subscription or licensing agreement to access. Some link resolvers provide "all text" linking capability with access services such as interlibrary loan and automated catalog searching. Link resolvers often come packaged with an A-Z e-journal title list, e-journal collection tools, and MARC record services to facilitate integrated management of electronic full-text resources.
Low Income Form
Description: Based on information provided by student, they had indicated that they had a low income for the previous year; this assists Financial Aid in verifying how the basic needs of the student's household were met during that year.

Description: A request that may be made in extraordinary cases in which a serious illness or injury prevents a student from continuing in classes in a particular term, and for which an arrangement with instructors for an extension or an incomplete grade is not possible. A Medical Hardship Withdrawal is not intended to apply in situations of chronic or ongoing medical, emotional, or psychological distress.
Metadata
Description: Literally, "data about data." Structured information describing information resources/objects for a variety of purposes. Metadata has been categorized as descriptive, structural, and administrative. Descriptive metadata facilitates indexing, discovery, identification, and selection. Structural metadata describes the internal structure of complex information resources. Administrative metadata aids in the management of resources and may include rights management metadata, preservation metadata, and technical metadata describing the physical characteristics of a resource.
Microfiche
Description: A small card-shaped sheet of photographic film designed for storing miniaturized text and/or microimages arranged sequentially in a two-dimensional grid (see this example). Microfiche is available in color or black and white (negative or positive). Various formats exist, but ISO recommends 75 x 125 mm (48 frames in four rows of 12) or 105 x 148 mm (60 frames in five rows of 12). Although each sheet usually includes a title and/or index number in a heading across the top that can be read without magnification, the text itself can be read and copied only with the aid of a microform reader-printer machine.
Microfilm
Description: The use of 16mm or 35mm photographic film to store miniaturized text and/or microimages in a linear array consisting of a single row (cine format) or double row of frames that can be magnified and reproduced only with the aid of specially designed equipment (see this example). Microfilm is available in color or black and white (negative or positive) and is used (1) in continuous rolls mounted on open spools (see this example) or in enclosed cartridges and (2) in unitized format in jackets or aperture cards. Stored under suitable environmental conditions, its longevity can be measured in centuries. For this reason, it is used for the preservation of paper documents at risk of deterioration.
Microform
Description: A generic term for a highly reduced photographic copy of text and/or images stored on a translucent medium (microfiche or microfilm) or on an opaque medium such as card stock (microopaque or aperture card). Microforms can be original editions or reproductions. Reader-printer machines are required to view and make hard copies. Digital storage media such as magnetic tape and disk, CD-ROM, etc., are superseding microforms in information storage and retrieval, but the transformation is far from complete.
Minor
Description: A secondary area of expertise to accompany a major if a student has excess elective credits to be used or if otherwise desired. Funding sources need to be consulted for coverage.

Description: A format for typing research papers and citing sources in the humanities developed by the Modern Language Association of America and published in the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, available in the reference section of most academic libraries.

Overlapping Loan Clearance Letter

Description: According to NSLDS, it appears that the student is currently receiving financial aid at another institution. In order for Bellevue University to be in compliance with Federal Regulations, the student has to provide a completed copy of the Overlapping Loan Clearance form; completed by the other institution.
Overpayment of Funds
Description: This is where according to the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) a student has received one or more overpayments of federal student aid funds. The student is required to repay any federal student aid funds prior to receiving any additional federal funds.

Peer-Reviewed Journal
Description: A scholarly journal that requires an article to be subjected to a process of critical evaluation by one or more experts on the subject, known as referees, responsible for determining if the subject of the article falls within the scope of the publication and for evaluating originality, quality of research, clarity of presentation, etc. Some bibliographic databases allow search results to be limited to peer-reviewed journals. Periodical Collection

Pervasive Spectrum Disorders
Description: Refers to a variety of disorders, including Autistic Disorder, Rhett's Disorder, and Asperger's Disorder, that are characterized by severe and pervasive impairment in several areas of development.
Physical Disability
Description: Variety of impairments, including mobility impairments, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, chemical sensitivities, etc., that limits the functioning of motor ability.
Plagiarism
Description: Appropriation of the works, ideas, or creations of another without crediting the source (Bellevue University 2010-2012 Course Catalog, page 12). Plagiarism should be reported to the appropriate College Dean and to the Dean of Students. If a student has committed plagiarism twice or more, the instructor may file a written request for suspension or expulsion with the Dean of Students.
Port of Entry
Abbreviation: POE
Description: Designated points of entry for foreign nationals to be processed for entry into the U.S. There are 327 official POE's in the U.S. and 15 pre-clearance offices in Canada and the Caribbean.
Preliminary Transfer Credit Evaluation
Abbreviation: PTCE
Description: Tentative review of credits from transferring institutions to be placed into a student's degree plan. This evaluation is not final, but provides a preview of anticipated credit transfer to Bellevue University. (Also known as Degree Plan)
Principal Designated School Official
Abbreviation: PDSO
Description: Each SEVIS-approved school must appoint a PDSO who serves as the principal contact between the government and the school.
Print disabilities
Description: Disabilities that affect access to printed material, e.g. blindness, low vision, learning disabilities, and other physical impairments.
Professional Journal
Description: A journal whose content is designed for the benefit of members of a particular profession. The New England Journal of Medicine is compiled for the benefit of doctors.
Program Dates
Abbreviation: PROGDATE
Description: Dates on an international student's I-20 indicating the beginning and the anticipated completion of a student's studies. A grace period of 60 days begins the day after the program end date.
ProQuest
Description: An online database provider that offers access to information from periodicals, newspapers, multimedia and image collections, out-of-print books, dissertations, and scholarly collections in various formats available on a subscription basis to schools and libraries around the world.
Provisional Accommodations
Description: Accommodations provided during the time it takes to acquire documentation of a disability, generally discontinued if supporting documentation is not received within 45 days.
Psychiatric/Psychological Disability
Description: Refers to a variety of disorders including depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorders, bipolar disorders, and dissociative disorders that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
Public Domain
Description: Any work not protected by copyright, which can be used freely by anyone without having to obtain copyright permission.

Reasonable Accommodations
Description: Accommodations, or changes within the learning environment, that modify non-essential components of programs so individuals (with disabilities) have equal access or opportunity.
Reciprocal Libraries
Description: This is a network of more than 40 Nebraska academic libraries that extend reciprocal borrowing privileges to the students, staff, and faculty of other libraries within the network.

Reduced Course Load
Abbreviation: RCL
Description: Students who produce documentation to Disability Services from a licensed medical doctor may be considered for a reduced course load in their studies. When approved by the Dean of Students, the DSO authorizes the RCL in SEVIS.
Relay service
Description: An operator service that allows people with communication-related disabilities (i.e. deaf/hard of hearing, speech-disabled) to communicate with telephone users via alternative means (person, keyboard, or other assistive device).
Requests for Further Evidence
Abbreviation: RFE
Description: Students applying for work authorization based on economic hardship or anything that may affect their immigration status may sometimes receive an RFE from the USCIS requesting further information before a decision is taken.
Residency requirement
Description: A minimum requirement of 30 credit hours completed at Bellevue University for a Bachelor's Degree. In-class or online. Also known as "in-residence."

Description: Service provided to students and alumni who have created a resume and wish to obtain professional feedback from Career Coaches to make sure the document is highlighting the right things.

Sallie Mae Refund
Description: In partner with Sallie Mae, Bellevue University offers three refund options. Student may choose to receive refunds in the form of a debit card, direct deposit or check.
Scholarship
Description: Institutional or Outside funding awarded to students based on academic achievement, and other criteria as a consideration. This funding is to be applied to the students cost of tuition (in most cases) unless otherwise specified.

Description: A dog trained to assist a person with a seizure disorder; may assist by standing guard, going for help, or even providing advanced warning of a seizure.
Service Animal
Description: An animal trained to assist people with disabilities in the activities of normal living.
Service Dog/Assistant Dog
Description: A dog that has been trained to assist a person who has a mobility or health impairment; duties performed may include carrying, fetching, opening doors, ringing doorbells, activating elevator buttons, etc.

Description: A portal located in BRUIN where students can access self-registration, financial account information, grades, biographical information, course schedule, GPA, transcripts, forms, etc.

Description: A document, located on the Disability Services page of the BU website, and available to inquiring students, that provides a description of the services offered by Disability Services. This document includes registration procedures, documentation guidelines, and resource information for students.
Student & Exchange Visitor System
Abbreviation: SEVIS
Description: SEVIS is an electronic system that allows information to be collected on an ongoing basis from schools and exchange programs on international students and exchange visitors during the course of their stay in the U.S. All schools issuing I-20's must be approved by SEVIS.
Student Financial Counselor
Description: Assists all new/continuing students with the review of financial options, and they will ensure that all official financial documentation is secured prior to registration. All financial questions may be directed to these staff members throughout the student life cycle.

TB Test Hold
Description: An indicator on a student record signifying their status as an International Student, which requires proof of a TB Test upon enrollment per Federal Immigration guidelines.
TEAS V (Test of Essential Academic Skills)
Description: The Test of Essential Academic Skills is a proctored assessment which is required for admission into the RN to BSN program at Bellevue University.This assessment consists of Reading, Mathematics, Science and English and Language Usage sections.
Temporary Medical Accommodations
Description: Accommodations that are not permanent; intended to assist students with temporary impairments during the period in which the condition is disabling.
Temporary Medical Impairments
Description: Broken limbs, burns, post-surgery recovery/rehabilitation, and other similar conditions that temporarily impair and/or interfere with a student's ability to fully participate in academic activities.

Description: One of four Academic periods during a calendar year when courses are typically in session, ranging from 10-12 weeks.

Description: Software that is utilized to allow text to be read aloud on a computer.
Third Party Contract
Description: Applicable account charges are moved off of students account onto a third party contract when they use the employee sponsored payment option.
TIER Pricing
Description: This is when a publisher assigns customers Tiers, in our case they would separate out by FTE (full time employees). Once you have been assigned a Tier, the publisher charges according to what tier you are in.

Description: Semester by semester enrollment/registration is required to remain active in-class or online. Description: An Official or Unofficial review of college-level courses attempted or completed at the designated institution. All outside transcripts must be submitted before enrollment. Bellevue University transcripts can be ordered in BRUIN e-Services or on the website. This permanent record lists all courses taken and the grade(s) received.

Description: A textual rendering of the audible information contained within a video, radio, broadcast, etc.
Truncation
Description: The method of using a special symbol at the end of a word to retrieve the stem or the root and all possible endings of that word. Some examples are: asterisk (*), the question mark (?), the pound sign (#), or the dollar sign ($) can be used to truncate terms.
Tuition Grant
Abbreviation: BUG GRANT
Description: Discretionary funding provided by the office of Enrollment to aid in the cost of tuition. The disbursement of funding will be applied to a student's account in alignment with the schedule for Financial Aid.
Tuition
Description: The amount charged for college instruction per credit hour that a student has enrolled.
Turnitin
Description: An Internet-based plagiarism-detection service created by iParadigms, LLC. Institutions, typically universities and high schools, buy licenses to submit essays to the Turnitin website, which checks the documents for plagiarism.
Two-Third's appeal (2/3rds appeal)
Description: An appeal for 2/3rd's is required when a student has not maintained at least 2/3rd's of their classes. For example if you're taking 3 classes at 9 credit hours and drop 2 of those classes you have not completed 2/3rd's of your courses. The same standard applies if you drop all 3 classes in one term.
U
Undue Hardship
Description: An accommodation that is cost prohibitive or impossible to administer. Such an accommodation is deemed unreasonable and thus denied.

Description: 300/400 numbered courses, the completion of which demonstrates the intellectual competencies of a four-year Bachelor's Degree.

Abbreviation: USCIS
Description: The USCIS is the government agency that oversees lawful immigration to the U.S. The USCIS is a branch of the Department of Homeland Security.
U.S. Office of Civil Rights
Abbreviation: OCR
Description: The office that receives disability discrimination complaints relative to higher education.

Verification
Description: The process by which an educational institution confirms the accuracy of the data reported on an individual student's FAFSA. About 30% of all Free Applications for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA's) are selected for verification by the Central Processing System (CPS). Bellevue University, through the Office of Financial Aid (FA), may also select applicants for verification to correct any potential conflicts in information. If your application is selected, FA is required to collect all necessary documentation from you and your parents or spouse, if applicable, per federal guidelines. Information from these documents is then compared to your FAFSA information and corrections to the FAFSA are made when necessary. FA must verify all applicants selected for verification, including students previously verified by another school.
Veteran Education Form
Abbreviation: VEF
Description: This form must be completed by any student who wants to use Veteran Education benefits. The information is used to create the appropriate student veteran education file.
Virtual Career Fair
Description: Online career fair with employer video presentations, the ability to "chat" with employers live, as well as submit resumes in real time.
Visa
Abbreviation: VISA
Description: International students must have an F-1 visa in their passports. Expired visas do not matter as long as the student is actively taking full-time classes. Students traveling outside the U.S. must renew their F-1 visa prior to re-entry if expired.
Vocational Rehabilitation
Description: An organization that assists people with disabilities, including Veterans, with transitioning to the workforce.

Waiver
Description: A request to excuse at most 1 credit hour of a required course in a Major, Minor or the General Education Core. May be selected from transfer courses or residential courses.

Description: The appointment system used to schedule tutoring sessions for both residential and out of area students.

Abbreviation: WAVE
Description: Active Duty or Reserve GI Bill or REAP must contact the Web Automated Verification of Enrollment (WAVE) to verify attendance.
