The Higher Learning Commission is part of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The Association was founded in 1895 as a membership organization for educational institutions. It is committed to developing and maintaining high standards of excellence.

The Association is one of six regional institutional accrediting associations in the United States. Through its Commissions it accredits, and thereby grants membership to educational institutions in the nineteen-state North Central region.

Verify our accreditation. Go to The Higher Learning Commission Directory site, and search for "Bellevue University". The returning page will show Bellevue University is accredited, and in good standing. To learn about the Criteria for Accreditation, click here.

To avoid unaccredited colleges and diploma mills be sure to verify the current accreditation status of any institution that you select. Please be aware that there is a proliferation of on-line institutions that are either unaccredited or are accredited by agencies that are not recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. You may call the USDE at (202) 219-7011 to check on the legitimacy of any accrediting agency.

And, Dr. John Bear, author of Bears' Guide to Earning Degrees by Distance Learning is cited by U.S. News & World Report and the Chronicle of Higher Education as a national watchdog for diploma mills, click here.

Also, Bellevue University participates in the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) of the Higher Learning Commission. The AQIP Web site states: “Launched in July 1999 with a generous grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts, the Academic Quality Improvement Program infuses the principles and benefits of continuous improvement into the culture of colleges and universities by providing an alternative process through which an already-accredited institution can maintain its accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission. With AQIP, an institution demonstrates it meets accreditation standards and expectations through sequences of events that align with those ongoing activities that characterize organizations striving to improve their performance.” One of the significant events of the AQIP effort is the Systems Portfolio.  Click here to see the Systems Portfolio for Bellevue University.   For more information on AQIP, click here.
