Intercollegiate Athletics

 

Bellevue University is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), an organization of small colleges and universities. The University also is a member of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC). The MCAC includes colleges in Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri.

The University competes in men’s basketball, baseball, and soccer. The women’s programs are volleyball, soccer, and softball. To participate in athletics, a freshman student must meet two of the three requirements listed below:

• ACT score of 18
• Upper half of high school graduating class
• 2.0 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale)

A transferring or continuing student must enroll in at least 12 hours each semester and maintain a 2.0 grade point average to participate in athletics. The University sports programs are designed to allow student athletes to participate in athletics while attending classes and working toward a degree in a specific area.

Baseball
Bellevue University’s baseball program began in 1968 and since has become a national powerhouse. The Bruins have made the national tournament every year – with the exception of two – since 1994, and won the NAIA World Series in 1995, giving Bellevue University its first national championship for any sport.

Basketball
The Bruin basketball team has qualified for the NAIA Division II national tournament six times since 1998 including: reaching the “Elite Eight” in 2003 and finishing fifth in the country with an overall record of 32-5; and ending the 2004 campaign as the national runner-up and ranked second in the country with a 33-6 record.

Softball
The Bruin softball program began in 1997. The team has made regionals every year, the national tournament twice, and has produced eight All-Americans, six of whom have been first team. The Bruins have won four regular season conference titles, and six conference tournament titles.

Men’s Soccer
The men’s soccer program began in 1995, and the Bruins have enjoyed great success. They have won three MCAC championships, in 1997, 2001, and 2002; and have qualified for the region tournament six times. More than 30 players have placed on the All-MCAC first team, including three conference Players of the Year. Eight of those players went on to earn all-region first team honors, as well as All-American status.

Volleyball
The Bruin volleyball program began in the mid-1980s. Since 1996 the Bruin squad has continually had winning seasons. It reached the “Elite Eight” at the national tournament in 2000, finishing fifth in the country. In 2001 it ranked in the top 10 for eight consecutive weeks. In the past six years, the volleyball  team has produced at least one first team all-region player and all-conference player each year.

Women’s Soccer
Since its inception in 1994, the Bruin women’s soccer program has consistently finished near the top of the MCAC conference, one of the country’s strongest conferences for women’s soccer. A rich competitive soccer tradition has produced seven academic All-American and athletic All-American athletes.
